**Claude MCP servers for books and movies fall into two camps.** Media server MCPs (Plex, Jellyfin, Kodi) let Claude search the files you host at home. Library MCPs (Achriom) let Claude reason across the books, movies, albums, TV, and anime you've actually collected, rated, and cared about. They solve different problems.

If you want Claude to browse and play what's on your home server, use Plex MCP. If you want Claude to recommend a book based on the last five films you loved, or pull up reading notes while you chat about a movie, use Achriom MCP. Most people who run both end up keeping both.

## What to look for in a Claude MCP for books and movies

A useful MCP server for personal media should handle at least three of these jobs well:

1. **Inventory access**: Claude can see what's in your library
2. **Search and lookup**: Claude can find a specific title or filter by criteria
3. **Context**: Claude can read your ratings, notes, or watch history
4. **Cross-format reasoning**: Claude can connect books to films to albums
5. **Write access**: Claude can add items, update status, or log activity

Most MCP servers cover one or two of these. Picking the right one depends on what you want Claude to actually do.

## Plex MCP

**Best for:** Asking Claude about your Plex media server

Plex MCP is the most-searched personal-media MCP in the ecosystem. It exposes your Plex library (movies, TV, music) to Claude so you can ask things like "what unwatched sci-fi do I have on Plex" or "start playing Dune season two in the living room."

Your Plex instance already knows what files you own, what you've played, and where your clients are. The MCP bridges that to Claude's reasoning.

**What it does well:**
- Searches your Plex library by title, genre, or collection
- Triggers playback on Plex clients
- Reads watch state and ratings from Plex itself
- Works with the library you already maintain

**Limitation:** Only sees what's on Plex. Books you read on Kindle, albums you stream on Apple Music, shows you watch on Netflix, none of that is in Plex. Recommendations are only as cross-media as your Plex server happens to be.

## Jellyfin MCP

**Best for:** Self-hosted media libraries without Plex

Jellyfin is the open-source alternative to Plex. A few Jellyfin MCPs exist on GitHub, mostly community-maintained. Same pattern as Plex MCP: Claude can query and control a Jellyfin server you run yourself.

If you're already on Jellyfin for privacy reasons or cost reasons, the MCP fits in without changing your setup. The ecosystem is smaller than Plex, and the tooling is less polished.

## Kodi MCP

**Best for:** Kodi users who want Claude on top

Kodi has an older, more DIY media-center culture. Community MCPs exist that wrap Kodi's JSON-RPC API. They tend to be more feature-complete on playback control (pause, skip chapters, resize the window) and less polished on library reasoning.

Useful if you already live in Kodi. Probably not worth setting up Kodi just to get the MCP.

## Achriom MCP

**Best for:** Cross-media reasoning across your full taste library

Achriom MCP is the only personal library MCP built around taste rather than file hosting. It exposes 29 tools across books, movies, albums, TV, and anime. Claude can search your collection, read your ratings and notes, find patterns across formats, and write back to your library.

**What it does differently:**
- Spans five media types in one library
- Reads your ratings, notes, and AI-analyzed themes per item
- Connects a book you loved to a film you should watch (and back)
- Works with what you've read or streamed, not only what you've hosted
- Writes back (Claude can add a book, change a status, save an insight)

**How to connect it:** Sign in at achriom.com, go to the [MCP page](/mcp/), and follow the OAuth flow for Claude Desktop, Claude.ai, ChatGPT, or any other MCP-compatible client. The full list of tools and setup steps are there.

**Limitation:** It doesn't play anything. You can't tell Achriom MCP to start a movie on your TV. For media server control, pair it with Plex MCP.

## What you can actually do with these MCPs today

A few concrete examples, phrased as prompts you'd type into Claude:

- "Look at the last five books I rated five stars in Achriom, then recommend a film I haven't seen that shares their themes."
- "What's unwatched on Plex that matches the mood of the last three albums I added to Achriom?"
- "Pull my notes on Stoner and tell me which director's filmography would land the same way."
- "I'm in the mood for something quiet and slow. Check my Achriom watch list and suggest one."
- "Summarize the themes across my top-rated anime this year and find two novels with the same feel."

The first two require a media server MCP and a taste library MCP running side by side. The last three work with Achriom alone.

## Quick comparison

| MCP | Scope | Library type | Cross-format | Write access | Best for |
|-----|-------|--------------|--------------|--------------|----------|
| Plex MCP | Movies, TV, music on your Plex server | Media server | No (within Plex only) | Playback control | Querying what's on Plex |
| Jellyfin MCP | Self-hosted media on Jellyfin | Media server | No | Varies by implementation | Jellyfin users |
| Kodi MCP | Kodi library and playback | Media center | No | Playback control | Kodi users |
| Achriom MCP | Books, movies, albums, TV, anime | Taste library | Yes (five formats) | Yes (add, update, annotate) | Reasoning across your full collection |

## Which should you use?

**Use Plex MCP if:** You host your own media library and want Claude to search, recommend, and play from it.

**Use Jellyfin MCP if:** You're on Jellyfin for the same reasons, without the Plex fee.

**Use Kodi MCP if:** Kodi is already your setup and you want conversational control via Claude.

**Use Achriom MCP if:** You want Claude to reason across your full taste in books, movies, albums, TV, and anime, regardless of where any individual file lives.

Many people run both a media server MCP and Achriom. One answers "what's on my server." The other answers "what should I read next given what I've watched."

## The honest answer

These MCPs solve different problems.

- **Play what I own:** Plex, Jellyfin, or Kodi MCP
- **Search my home media files:** any of the above
- **Reason across my full taste:** Achriom MCP
- **Add to my library from chat:** Achriom MCP
- **Cross-format recommendations:** Achriom MCP

If you only host movies and TV and never think about books or albums, a media server MCP is probably enough. If your taste includes what you read and what you listen to, Achriom MCP is the only one that covers all of it.

## Common questions

### Does Claude have an MCP for my Kindle or Apple Books?

Not directly. Kindle and Apple Books are not exposed as MCP servers by Amazon or Apple as of April 2026. You can import your reading history into Achriom and then access it through Achriom MCP, which is the closest current path for Claude to reason about your books.

### Can Claude use Plex MCP and Achriom MCP at the same time?

Yes. MCP clients like Claude Desktop and Claude.ai support multiple connected servers. You can ask a single question that pulls from both, such as matching your Achriom reading history to something watchable on Plex tonight.

### Is there a Letterboxd or Goodreads MCP?

Not as of April 2026. Neither platform has shipped an official MCP server, and the community ones are thin. If you export your data and import it into Achriom, you get a maintained MCP over the same library.

### What's the difference between Plex MCP and Achriom MCP?

Plex MCP queries files on your media server. Achriom MCP queries your taste library (books, movies, albums, TV, anime) with ratings, notes, and cross-format patterns. They complement each other rather than compete.

### How do I connect Achriom MCP to Claude?

Go to [achriom.com/mcp](/mcp/) and follow the OAuth flow. It takes about a minute and works with Claude Desktop, Claude.ai, ChatGPT, Cursor, Zed, Windsurf, and anything else that speaks MCP.

### Do I need a paid Achriom plan to use the MCP?

No. The MCP is free for all Achriom accounts, including the free tier. Pro gets you unlimited AI messages inside Achriom itself. The MCP is open to everyone.
