# How to Export Your Letterboxd Diary (and What to Do With It)

**Your Letterboxd diary is your data.** If you want a backup, a fresh start somewhere new, or just to know what you've got, here's how to export it, what comes out, and what to do with it afterward.

## What Letterboxd exports

Letterboxd exports a ZIP file containing five CSV files:

- **diary.csv**: every logged film with the date you watched it, your rating (if given), whether it was a rewatch, and a notes field
- **ratings.csv**: all films you've rated, with the rating date and score (on the 0.5 to 5.0 scale)
- **reviews.csv**: your written reviews with the film, the text, rating, and date
- **watchlist.csv**: your saved "want to watch" list
- **lists.csv**: every custom list you've created, with the films in each one

The export is comprehensive. If you've been logging on Letterboxd for years, this is your full film history in portable form.

**Note:** You need Letterboxd Pro to export. The free tier doesn't include the export option. Pro is $35/year or $19/year on sale.

## How to export your Letterboxd data

1. Log in at [letterboxd.com](https://letterboxd.com)
2. Click your username in the top right, then select **Settings**
3. Go to the **Import & Export** tab
4. Scroll to the **Export** section
5. Click **Export Your Data**
6. Letterboxd will generate a ZIP file and email it to your account address, usually within a few minutes

The email arrives with a download link. The ZIP contains the five CSV files above.

## What to do with the files

### Import to Trakt

Trakt accepts Letterboxd CSV imports for your diary and ratings.

1. Go to [trakt.tv](https://trakt.tv) and open Settings
2. Select the **Import** section
3. Upload your **diary.csv** file
4. Trakt maps your ratings and watch dates

Your watch history transfers cleanly. Lists and reviews don't transfer.

### Import to Simkl

Simkl has a Letterboxd import via Settings > Import. It reads your diary and watchlist. The process is similar to Trakt and usually completes within minutes.

### Import to iCheckMovies

iCheckMovies doesn't have a direct CSV import from Letterboxd format, but it supports IMDB lists. You can convert your Letterboxd export to IMDB-compatible format using community-built tools (search "letterboxd to imdb converter" for current options).

### Keep it as a backup

Even if you're staying on Letterboxd, exporting periodically is worth doing. The CSV files are your film history in a format you can open in any spreadsheet tool. It's an insurance policy.

## What you can't take with you

**Followers and following.** Social connections are Letterboxd's and don't export.

**Lists other people have made.** Only your own lists export.

**Activity feed.** The diary of other people's activity doesn't come with you.

**Your reputation.** Likes on your reviews, your followers, the social context of your profile: none of that is in the data files.

This is a significant consideration if the community is part of why you use Letterboxd. Your logged history is portable. The social layer is not.
