**Tags:** books, guide, recommendations

---

**Read them in publication order: *The Lightning Thief*, *The Sea of Monsters*, *The Titan's Curse*, *The Battle of the Labyrinth*, then *The Last Olympian*.** The story runs straight through, so that is also the story order. Season 3 of the Disney+ series, which premieres November 20, adapts the third book, *The Titan's Curse* ([Hollywood Reporter](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/percy-jackson-season-3-premiere-date-1236655097/), [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percy_Jackson_and_the_Olympians_(TV_series))).

Rick Riordan's five books came out between 2005 and 2009. The show gives each one a season: season 1 is the first book, season 2 the second, season 3 the third. If you are caught up on the show, you have exactly three books of runway, and book three is the short one.

## The five books, in order

Page counts are the hardcover editions as listed on Wikipedia, and the one-line premises avoid spoilers.

### 1. The Lightning Thief (2005)

![The Lightning Thief (2005)](/blog/assets/percy-jackson-books-in-order/the-lightning-thief-book.jpg)

377 pages. Percy Jackson is a twelve-year-old in New York with dyslexia and ADHD who finds out he is a demigod, and he has to recover Zeus's stolen Master Bolt before a deadline or the gods go to war ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lightning_Thief)). The show's **season 1** adapts it: eight episodes that began in December 2023.

### 2. The Sea of Monsters (2006)

![The Sea of Monsters (2006)](/blog/assets/percy-jackson-books-in-order/the-sea-of-monsters-book.jpg)

279 pages. Percy, Annabeth and a new arrival, Tyson, sail to rescue their satyr friend Grover, with the Golden Fleece as the thing that could save Camp Half-Blood ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sea_of_Monsters)). The show's **season 2** adapts it: eight episodes from December 10, 2025 to January 21, 2026, with Daniel Diemer as Tyson. It is the shortest book in the series.

### 3. The Titan's Curse (2007)

![The Titan's Curse (2007)](/blog/assets/percy-jackson-books-in-order/the-titan-s-curse-book.jpg)

312 pages. Artemis and Annabeth have been kidnapped by Kronos's army, and Percy and his friends set out to rescue them. Thalia, a daughter of Zeus, and Nico and Bianca di Angelo, two children of Hades, all come into the story here ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Titan%27s_Curse)). The show's **season 3** adapts it, premiering November 20, 2026 on Disney+ with eight episodes. Tamara Smart plays Thalia.

### 4. The Battle of the Labyrinth (2008)

![The Battle of the Labyrinth (2008)](/blog/assets/percy-jackson-books-in-order/the-battle-of-the-labyrinth-book.jpg)

361 pages. Luke Castellan and his army want to use Daedalus's Labyrinth to invade Camp Half-Blood, and Percy's group has to find Daedalus himself before they can ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Battle_of_the_Labyrinth)). The show has not announced a season for it. Wikipedia's page on the series mentions no season after the third.

### 5. The Last Olympian (2009)

![The Last Olympian (2009)](/blog/assets/percy-jackson-books-in-order/the-last-olympian-book.jpg)

381 pages, the longest of the five. A prophecy says a child of Zeus, Poseidon or Hades will face a choice that could save or destroy Olympus, and the Titan army led by Kronos attacks ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Olympian)). Like book four, it has no announced season yet.

## Which book is each season?

| Season | Book | Pages | Streaming |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Lightning Thief | 377 | Disney+ and Hulu; Netflix until about January 2027 |
| 2 | The Sea of Monsters | 279 | Disney+ and Hulu; Netflix until about January 2027 |
| 3 | The Titan's Curse | 312 | Disney+, from November 20, 2026 |

Seasons 1 and 2 landed on Netflix worldwide on October 4, 2026, under a Disney licensing deal. What's on Netflix puts the window at about three months, so early January 2027; Season 3 is a Disney+ exclusive ([What's on Netflix](https://www.whats-on-netflix.com/news/percy-jackson-seasons-1-2-netflix-release/)).

If you want to read ahead of the show, you have until November 20 to finish *The Titan's Curse*, and at 312 pages it is a weekend. If you would rather stay spoiler-free, stick to the show until it reaches the book.

## Track the books and the show together

Percy Jackson lives on a shelf and on a screen, and [Achriom](https://www.achriom.com) tracks both. It covers books, films, shows, albums, anime, podcasts, games and manga, so the five novels and the series can sit on one shelf. Books take statuses including on hold and did-not-finish, progress by page or percent, and start and finish dates. Shows are tracked season by season and episode by episode, with a calendar of upcoming episodes and premieres. The free plan has no item limit, and your shelf stays private until you turn on a public profile.

The librarian answers questions about what you have logged, so after book two you can ask what is coming next, in the app, in ChatGPT, in Claude or in Cursor. The free plan includes 10 librarian messages a month.

The series has its own page here, [Percy Jackson and the Olympians (2023)](https://www.achriom.com/show/percy-jackson-and-the-olympians-2023). For the books, see [The Lightning Thief](https://www.achriom.com/book/the-lightning-thief-percy-jackson-and-the-olympians-1), [The Sea of Monsters](https://www.achriom.com/book/the-sea-of-monsters-percy-jackson-and-the-olympians-2), [The Titan's Curse](https://www.achriom.com/book/the-titan-s-curse-percy-jackson-and-the-olympians-3), [The Battle of the Labyrinth](https://www.achriom.com/book/the-battle-of-the-labyrinth-percy-jackson-and-the-olympians-4) and [The Last Olympian](https://www.achriom.com/book/the-last-olympian-percy-jackson-and-the-olympians-5).

If you only track books, [Goodreads](https://www.goodreads.com) does that, and if you only track TV, [Trakt](https://trakt.tv) does that. Our guides to [the best book tracking apps](/blog/best-book-tracking-apps/) and [the best TV show trackers](/blog/best-tv-tracking-apps/) compare them, and [the best media tracker for more than one medium](/blog/best-all-in-one-media-tracker/) covers the case where a series spans a shelf and a screen. If your reading history is in Goodreads, [how to move from Goodreads to Achriom](/blog/how-to-import-your-goodreads-library/) covers the import.

## What comes after The Last Olympian

Riordan kept going, and the order stays simple: publication order again.

### The Heroes of Olympus (2010 to 2014)

![The Lost Hero (2010)](/blog/assets/percy-jackson-books-in-order/the-lost-hero-book.jpg)

Five books, from *The Lost Hero* in 2010 to *The Blood of Olympus* in 2014. Percy is one of seven demigods at the center of it, and in *The Son of Neptune* he has amnesia. Wikipedia says the series can be read on its own but is meant to follow Percy Jackson and the Olympians ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Heroes_of_Olympus)). Start here after book five.

### The Trials of Apollo (2016 to 2020)

Five more books, from *The Hidden Oracle* in 2016 to *The Tower of Nero* in 2020, and a sequel to *The Heroes of Olympus* ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Heroes_of_Olympus)). Read it after the second series.

### The Senior Year Adventures (2023 and 2024)

*The Chalice of the Gods* (2023) and *Wrath of the Triple Goddess* (2024) are Percy Jackson books again ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percy_Jackson_%26_the_Olympians)).

## What about the films?

Two films came out before the series: *Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief* in 2010 and *Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters* in 2013, adapting books one and two. The show is a fresh start rather than a continuation of them, so you can skip the films without missing anything. If you want to see the older versions anyway, they are on Achriom as [The Lightning Thief (2010)](https://www.achriom.com/movie/percy-jackson-the-olympians-the-lightning-thief-2010) and [Sea of Monsters (2013)](https://www.achriom.com/movie/percy-jackson-sea-of-monsters-2013).

## Questions people ask

### What order should I read the Percy Jackson books in?

Read them in the order they were published: The Lightning Thief (2005), The Sea of Monsters (2006), The Titan's Curse (2007), The Battle of the Labyrinth (2008) and The Last Olympian (2009). The story runs straight through, so the publication order is also the story order.

### What book is Percy Jackson season 3 based on?

The Titan's Curse, the third book. Season 1 adapted The Lightning Thief and season 2 adapted The Sea of Monsters. Season 3 premieres on Disney+ on November 20, 2026, with eight episodes.

### How many Percy Jackson books are there?

Five in the original series, published from 2005 to 2009. Rick Riordan then wrote The Heroes of Olympus (five books, 2010 to 2014), The Trials of Apollo (five books, 2016 to 2020) and two Senior Year Adventures books, The Chalice of the Gods (2023) and Wrath of the Triple Goddess (2024).

### Do I need to read the books before watching the Percy Jackson show?

No. The show starts from the first book and tells the story in order, so you can watch it cold. Reading ahead means knowing what happens next, and The Titan's Curse is only 312 pages if you want to finish it before season 3.

### Where can I watch Percy Jackson seasons 1 and 2?

On Disney+ and Hulu. Both seasons also arrived on Netflix on October 4, 2026, under a licensing deal, for a window of about three months. Season 3 stays on Disney+.

### Are the Percy Jackson movies worth reading the books for?

The 2010 film The Lightning Thief and the 2013 film Sea of Monsters adapt the first two books, but the Disney+ series is the one continuing the story. If you want the story as it continues, the series is the one to follow.
