If Below left you wanting more, watch Midnight Mass first, then Sea Fever, The Lighthouse and FROM, and play Dredge if you want the same fog in your hands. Each one picks up a different thread of Jesse McKeown’s 2026 Netflix series: a fishing town with something wrong in the water, and a way of life under threat.

This is about the series, not David Twohy’s 2002 film of the same name. Below follows Calvin Penney, a fisherman in the Newfoundland town of Snook’s Arm who has no fish left to catch, as the last residents weigh whether to leave and a sea creature shows up offshore. All six episodes landed on Netflix on October 8, 2026. Here are six picks, each with the thread that ties it to Below.

What to look for after Below

Below (2026)

Below is a creature story, but the creature is not the whole show. Its town is dying before anything comes out of the water: the fish are gone, the village faces resettlement and the holdouts are arguing about it. The picks below keep that town in the frame.

Watch next

Four screen picks: two with a fishing community at the center, two that borrow other pieces of Below.

Midnight Mass

Midnight Mass (2021)

Mike Flanagan’s seven-episode Netflix miniseries, released September 24, 2021, is set on Crockett Island, a fishing village devastated by an oil spill. A young man comes home after four years in prison just as a mysterious, charismatic priest starts reviving the town’s faith, and strange things follow.

The thread to Below is the place. Both shows are about a fishing community whose way of life is already under strain when something arrives to make it worse. Midnight Mass is about the town’s faith more than a creature, so go in expecting a slower, more talkative show.

Sea Fever

Sea Fever (2020)

Neasa Hardiman’s Sea Fever follows the crew of a fishing trawler, the Niamh Cinn Óir, who enter a restricted zone off Ireland and find themselves trapped with a parasitic infection. Its lead, Siobhan, is a PhD student studying deep sea fauna. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2019 and reached video on demand in April 2020.

Of the screen picks, it is the one that puts you on a working fishing boat, the way Below puts you in a fisherman’s life. At 95 minutes it is also the shortest.

The Lighthouse

The Lighthouse (2019)

Robert Eggers’s 2019 film The Lighthouse puts Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe on an island off New England in the 1890s, a new keeper on a four-week stint under an older former sailor, stranded by a storm as their relationship turns hostile. The production built a 70-foot lighthouse at Cape Forchu in Nova Scotia.

The link is the old sea belief. In the film, Dafoe’s keeper warns Pattinson not to kill a gull, because sailors hold that gulls are reincarnated sailors, and killing one brings a storm. Both stories lean on sea lore. This is the pick for the folklore thread, not the community one: there are only two men on the island.

FROM

FROM (2022)

John Griffin’s series FROM, which premiered on Epix in February 2022 and now airs on MGM+, is set in a town that traps anyone who enters. Residents survive nightly attacks by creatures from the forest while looking for a way out. Boyd Stevens, the self-appointed sheriff, keeps the place running, and a newly arrived family learns it can’t leave.

The thread is the siege. Below and FROM both hold a small community in one place while something outside it hunts at night, and both are about people who keep the routines going because the routines are what is left. FROM runs four seasons (forty episodes) so far, and MGM+ has renewed it for a fifth and final season, scheduled for 2027. We also have a list of what to read after FROM.

Below’s sea creature is a story about a town as much as a monster, so the last two picks leave the screen: one you play, one you read.

Dredge

Dredge (2023)

Black Salt Games’ fishing game Dredge, published by Team17 and released March 30, 2023, sends you to the coastal town of Greater Marrow as its new fisherman. Days are calm and you fish, upgrade your boat and manage a Tetris-style inventory. At night comes the fog, and the sea monsters, and a panic meter that climbs the longer you stay out after dark or skip sleep. It reached Android and iOS in February 2025.

Below’s fisherman has a town to protect; in Dredge you are the fisherman, and you decide whether to stay out for one more catch. The game’s creatures are Lovecraftian, which leads to the last pick.

The Shadow over Innsmouth

H.P. Lovecraft wrote The Shadow over Innsmouth, a novella, in November and December 1931. A student on a tour of New England visits Innsmouth, a decaying Massachusetts fishing port where the residents are hostile to outsiders and have strange, fish-like features. He learns that Obed Marsh, a sea captain from the town’s founding family, started a cult that traded sacrifices to the Deep Ones for large fish hauls when Innsmouth fell on hard times.

The thread is the fishing town with a secret in the water. It is an older version of Below’s setup, and it carries Lovecraft’s xenophobia, which is explicit in the story and worth knowing before you start. Our what to read after Widow’s Bay list also includes it, with a note on that racism. If you would rather read about the water itself, try what to read after Whalefall.

Which to pick first

If you want the same kind of town and the same kind of people, Midnight Mass. If you want a boat and a deadline, Sea Fever, because it is 95 minutes. If what stuck was the superstition, The Lighthouse. If you want to stay in a town that is under pressure for several seasons, FROM. If you want to be the fisherman, Dredge. And if you want to see where the sea-town secret comes from, read Lovecraft.
